Being a creative photographer is much more than saying ‘yes or no’ to presets, filters and recipes. Creative photography is about knowing what is possible, learning to do it yourself, and then playing with that knowledge.

This six week short course, team-taught by Les and Andrey Walkling, is dedicated to insightful and expressive photographic practice. We meet for two and a half hours each Wednesday evening, beginning where our Knowing and Loving your Camera short course concluded. That is, we only assume a basic understanding of your camera, it’s controls and capabilities.

We then help you to further develop and refine your photographic skills across four genres of photography: The Natural World (Landscape/Natural History), Inhabited Places (Events/Travel), the Built-Environment (Architecture), and Ourselves (Portraiture). These sessions are interspersed with encouraging and supportive reviews of your work, where we pride ourselves on the level of individual attention provided. Topics include:

Session 1: Photographing the Natural World:
This sessions looks at contemporary landscape photography, natural history photography, and the photograph as a document

Session 2: Portrait Photography:
This session focuses on portrait compositions, posing, lighting, and staging strategies, environmental portraiture, and the photograph as a diary.

Session 3: Reviews:
This session revolves around the supportive and encouraging review of your work, combining production techniques and workflows with philosophical and historical reflections on photography.

Session 4: The Photography of Inhabited Places:
This session investigates travel and lifestyle photography, event photography, reportage, and the photograph as a witness.

Session 5: Photographing the Built-Environment:
This session explores architectural photography, including its objects and spaces, and the photograph as a spatial narrative.

Session 6: Reviews:
This session brings it all together, reviewing and showcasing your work, along with related examples from the history of photography, before concluding with a discussion of what comes next.

In summary, this six week program is devoted to helping you, in a supportive and encouraging manner, and within a contemporary art setting, to become better informed, more assured, and more skilful as a creative photographer.

Detailed class notes, video tutorials and references are provided along with practical exercises.
